Witch-Hunt Continues: Historian Fired for Book on History of Hrodna

Authorities not satisfied with the book by Andrej Charniakievich’s book dismissed author and seized book from bookshops and libraries.

Andrej Charniakievich, a PhD in History and the author of multiple books and scientific articles on history, was fired from Janka Kupala State University of Hrodna on Friday where he held the position of an associate professor.

The official reason was mentioned as “repeated late arrivals at workplace” Mr. Charniakievich was recently asked to explain. The paradox is in the fact that at least one such late arrivals at workplace was caused by a talk with a KGB officer. Mr. Charniakievich was questioned about his new recently published book Hrodnaznaustva (Hrodna Studies) on the history of Hrodna.

The reports on the book’s taking away from Hrodna University library and bookshops started appearing last week.

Other authors of Hrodna Studies were also visited by secret services agents. The KGB wanted to know two things: 1) who was the author for the last chapters on Belarus’ independence after the USSR dissolution; 2) why the last year mentioned in the book is 1991 and the modern period of Belarusian statehood is not covered anyhow; 3) who decided to print the national symbol Pahonia and the white-red-white flag* (but not the present ones) on book’s last page.

Hrodna Studies, a brilliant and deep book on the history of Belarus and Hrodna, was the Belarusian-language bestseller this year. However, it is said to cause authorities fury by not having any information on the events in Belarus since 1991. Another point is the detailed description of civil society movement.

Hrodna libraries and bookshops and also publishing house Bielkniha refused to comment on the situation with the book for Nasha Niva.

The incident with the Hrodna Science definitely is an alarming signal for Belarusian science and culture.
