Lithuanian Presidential Counsellor: Belarus Can’t Be Ignored, Isolation from EU Senseless
Lithuania, being a neighbouring country, cannot ignore Belarus. Furthermore, whole Europe does not agree to isolate the country, Delfi quotes Lithuanias’ chief presidential counsellor on foreing policy Jovitos Neliupšienės
On the other hand, Europe by its focused sanctions clearly signals Lukashenka who is violating fundamental human rights.
“Being the neighbours, it is impossible not to have relations. Having 700km of mutual border, tight and mature historic, economic and cultural bonds, it is impossible to break them. Whole Europe admits that isolation is a lose-lose game, it won’t pay for itself,” she said.
According to Jovitos Neliupšienės, it is impossible to fence off from multiple issues.
“Moreover, there is no way to be a democracy model other than letting Belarusians experience democracy in the streets of Vilnius or any other European capital. It is obvious,” she noted.
“A delicate issue is whether to contact and how to contact with the regime. Undoubtedly, there should be a clear sign to the regime focusing attention on human rights violations. In connection to Belarus, this sign is focused sanctions against definite sponsors of the regime, denying them visas and halting economic cooperation.”
“If considered from national security perspective, it would be more preferable for Belarus to be an independent state, to take major decisions on its own.
“The logical outcome from this is the policy of mutual contacts advocated by both Lithuania and the EU.
“There is no a more effective policy which allows to find a reasonable balance between promotion of democracy and human rights and rational and pragmatic interests,” Jovitos Neliupšienės highlighted.
