UK to ban boiling crabs and lobsters alive

British authorities have deemed the method of slaughtering crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans by immersing them in boiling water unacceptable, as there is evidence that these invertebrates are capable of feeling pain, writes The Guardian.

Similar bans are already in effect in Switzerland, Norway, and New Zealand. Animal welfare advocates believe it is more humane to stun crustaceans with electrical devices or cool them with ice before boiling.

As early as 2022, a law was passed in England officially recognizing that lobsters, crabs, and octopuses can feel pain and suffering. According to representatives of charitable organizations, when live and conscious animals are plunged into boiling water, they endure intense suffering for several minutes, which can be entirely avoided.

In addition, the country is preparing other changes in animal welfare: plans include banning puppy farming, discussing restrictions on the use of electric shock collars for dogs, and introducing new requirements for the humane slaughter of farmed fish.
