The UK does not support the proposal from the leaders of France and Italy to initiate talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine, stated British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

"I think we need proof that Putin really wants peace, and at the moment I don't see it," Cooper said in an interview with Politico.
According to her, Ukraine, together with the US and Europe, is working on a peace plan, but Putin is still not ready to sit down at the negotiating table. In this regard, Cooper called for increased pressure on Moscow through economic sanctions and military support for Kyiv.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni publicly called for opening diplomatic channels of communication with Putin, despite the US-initiated talks having "reached a dead end."
Against this backdrop, according to Politico sources, European Union countries have begun discussing the possibility of creating a position for a special representative to negotiate with Russia on Ukraine. The publication's interlocutors clarified that the initiative is aimed at preventing a situation where "the US concludes a deal with Russia behind their backs."
At the same time, proponents of the idea believe that the presence of an EU special representative at the negotiating table will allow them to defend key positions, including Ukraine's future membership in NATO.
