Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro hospitalized in intensive care

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a long prison sentence, has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a Brazilian hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia, Euronews reports .

According to doctors, Bolsonaro exhibited high fever, low blood oxygen levels, sweating, and chills. The examination revealed bronchopneumonia — a form of lung inflammation likely caused by stomach contents entering the airways.

Doctors note that in people over 70 (Bolsonaro will turn 71 in a week), such an illness often has a severe course and can lead to sepsis if bacteria enter the bloodstream.

The former president's eldest son reported on social media that his father was transferred from prison to the hospital after waking up with severe chills and vomiting. The cardiologist treating Bolsonaro also noted that he is unlikely to return to prison in the coming days, as the treatment is inpatient and requires intravenous medication.

The politician's family continues to ask the Supreme Court to allow Bolsonaro to serve his sentence under house arrest, claiming that he does not receive proper medical care in prison. The court has so far refused, citing suspicions of a possible escape attempt, but had previously transferred the former president to a more spacious cell.

Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced in September 2025 by Brazil's Federal Supreme Court and received 27 years in prison for attempting a coup and other charges, including leading an armed criminal organization and attempting to violently change the democratic order. He denies his guilt.
