The border security service of Lithuania started investigation into the illegal border crossing performed by Swedish pilots who dropped ca. 1,000 teddy bears over Belarus on July 4, Delfi.lt reports.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Lithuania says the investigation was initiated over the illegal crossing of the state border and violation of international flights regulations. The pre-trial investigations is performed by the Prosecutor General's Office, BelaPAN says
Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius told the radio station Ziniu Radijas in an interview that once he gets back to work after vacation, he will immediately request information about the unsanctioned flight of Swedish pilots from Lithuania to Belarus on 4 July with a view to investigating the incident, BelTA informs.
The Prime Minister of Lithuania intends to request comprehensive information about the incident as well as all the details surrounding it. According to Andrius Kubilius, the incident has to be investigated because Lithuania is a neighbor of Belarus. As a European Union member Lithuania also has to pursue a common EU policy.
According to Andrius Kubilius, Lithuanian and Belarusian law enforcement agencies follow cooperation rules and therefore, Lithuania has every opportunity to act in line with such agreements. “I think we will do it like that,” said the Prime Minister.
