Police Denies Beating AP Photographer Siarhiej Hryc

Police denied filing suit against the offenders who beat Associated Press photographer Siarhiej Hryc.

Minsk police informed that citizens Arcabyshau, Kurlovich, Viniacki and Vinahradau and also seven persons with photo and video equipment were detained on September 18 as the violators of the Law on Mass Events.

Civil-dressed person injured photographer Siarhiej Hryc as he was hit in the face. However, the police admitted using force against Paviel Vinahradau and other activist, but denied that any actions were taken against Siarhiej Hryc.

“The investigation did not allow to study the circumstances of injuring Mr. Hryc as none police officer used force, violence or special equipment against him,” the police report says. It is also impossible to find out who is responsible for erasing the photos of the protest rally from “videocamera” (as it is stated in the report though actually Siarhiej Hryc used photocamera) as it was not seized by the police, thus there is no corpus delicti.

The police also refused to seek for the persons who beat the photographer.

Camera operator Aliaksandr Barazienka, photo correspondent for Associated Press Siarhiej Hryc and Reuters Viktar Fiadosienka, Tacciana Ziankovich and Paval Padabied (BelaPAN) and also activists of Zmiena (youth wing of “Tell the Truth!” movement) Aliaksandr Arcabyshau and Paval Vinahradau were captured several minutes ago during a rally in Minsk. The journalists of German TV channel ZDF were also among detained.

The activists of Zmiena held an election agitation rally and served out borsch. Thus the activists symbolically referred to the words of Central Election Commission Chairperson Lidzija Jarmoshyna who advised the women to sit home and cook borsch but not to participate in mass protests after the presidential elections in 2010.
