23-year-old Ukrainian with a Jammer Detained in Warsaw — He Drew Attention by Spending Hours in an Airport Cafe

23-year-old Ukrainian Illia S. was detained at Warsaw Chopin Airport on December 26. The man had a radio jammer with him, which operates in frequency ranges reserved for aviation communication and navigation, reports Rzeczpospolita.
The airport security services were alerted by the young man's behavior. He settled in one of the airport cafes – and sat at a table for hours, ordering coffee, snacks, and setting up his laptop. On the day of the arrest, he had his equipment set up for about six hours.
After his detention, Illia S. could not rationally explain what he was doing at the airport or why he had a jammer with him. “He first claimed to be a soldier, then immediately after said he was a businessman. He also did not explain what he was doing in Poland, when or why he came here,” Rzeczpospolita sources report.
“The suspect is 23 years old, he claims to permanently reside in Canada,” says prosecutor Piotr Skiba, spokesman for the district prosecutor's office in Warsaw. He added that the suspect pleaded not guilty and gave contradictory testimonies.
Illia S. was charged with attempting acts that “create a threat to aviation safety.” The man was temporarily arrested for one month. The investigation is being conducted by the Warsaw-Ochota district prosecutor's office.
“If someone wants to drink coffee, they don't go to the airport to sit there for hours; they go to the Old Town or to the 'Blikle' confectionery. The suspect's behavior requires detailed examination,” emphasizes prosecutor Piotr Skiba.
