CSIS Report: Russia lost 1.2 million killed and wounded in the war, Ukraine - up to 600 thousand

The American research center CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies) has published a report estimating the total number of military personnel that Ukraine and Russia have lost in the war, killed and wounded.

According to the center's experts, the total number of Russian losses since February 2022, when the full-scale invasion began, amounts to up to 1.2 million, including 325,000 killed, writes the BBC.

The estimate of the number of deceased Russian military personnel generally aligns with the calculations made by the Russian BBC service, together with "Mediazona" and a team of volunteers, based on open sources.

According to the BBC, the actual number of those killed on the Russian side could be in the range of 254,800 to 368,100 people. However, the final figure significantly increases if those who fought against Ukraine as part of the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR units are included.

At the same time, calculating the number of wounded is much more difficult. This is partly due to the fact that reports of injuries are rarely published in the media, and also because wounded Russian servicemen are often sent back to the front after treatment and can sustain new injuries.

"Since World War II, no leading world power has suffered similar losses in any wars," the CSIS report states regarding Russian losses.

As CSIS writes, during the full-scale invasion, the Armed Forces of Ukraine likely lost between 500,000 and 600,000 people killed and wounded, including 100,000 to 140,000 deceased.
