"Where am I, who am I, where is Belarus?" Zmitser Dashkevich tried to answer emigrant questions

An interview with Zmitser Dashkevich, in which the former political prisoner answered questions often posed by emigrants, was released on Sasha Ivulin's "ChestnOK-LIVE" channel.

Firstly, what to do now, when the understanding has come that "everything is for a long time." One must live for today, here and now do everything that depends on you for Belarus to exist, Dashkevich is convinced, Reform.news reports.

"Where am I, who am I, where is Belarus? When will I return to Belarus?" Dashkevich answers these emigrant questions simply, in a Bahushevich-like manner: "Belarus is where the Belarusian language is."

Language is what keeps Belarus alive, even when the territory is under occupation and repression.

"What will happen if you don't speak your native language? You will dig trenches and perish," Dashkevich answers Ivulin's question about what to do with Russia. Because "Russkiy Mir" (Russian world) is where "Russian speech" is.

"Every person who speaks Russian, consciously or unconsciously, helps Russia destroy Ukraine and Belarus," the former political prisoner categorically states.

During the conversation, Dashkevich begins to reflect on the "strength of the weak." By identifying our weakness, we do what is currently achievable for us. In their time, by initiating the defense of Kurapaty, people did the impossible – they won. Although the forces were unequal.

The interlocutors touched upon the question of how the Belarusian language was treated in prison.

Dashkevich recalls encountering aggression both from the administration and from the inmates. "But if you overcome this conflict situation, then the people who insult you for the Belarusian language themselves start speaking Belarusian."

The main thing is to be faithful to what you have chosen. In prison, where everything is aimed at breaking a person, language becomes a form of resistance.

He calls those who beat him for the Belarusian language "adherents of the 'Russian world'": "In half or most of the security offices there are Russian flags. In their heads, it's Russia. They do not identify themselves as Belarusians if they beat you for the Belarusian language."

Therefore, there is no major division within Belarusian society, Dashkevich believes. There are Belarusians and adherents of the "Russian world."
