Western intelligence agencies doubt Ukraine is behind the assassination attempt on General Alekseev
Sources in Western intelligence agencies doubt that the Ukrainian state is behind the assassination attempt on Deputy Head of the General Staff of the Russian Federation Vladimir Alekseev, writes The Washington Post.

Vladimir Alekseev
Although Ukrainian special services have previously successfully eliminated high-ranking Russian generals, Western sources are now unsure of their involvement. The main reason for doubt is the timing, as Alekseev's superior, the head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff Igor Kostyukov, is in Abu Dhabi as part of a Russian delegation. Such an action at this time could disrupt negotiations and anger US President Donald Trump.
"They've carried out similar strikes in the past, but doing it right now would be pretty crazy on their part," says a former senior American intelligence official.
Ukrainian sources hold a similar position:
"We are not fools, believe me," said a former Ukrainian intelligence official who worked with former HUR head, now Head of the Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha also dismissed any connection between Ukraine and the assassination attempt in a comment to Reuters.
At the same time, some Russian channels are suggesting a version of internal conflict. Alekseev is known for the phrase "Take them away, take them away" during Yevgeny Prigozhin's mutiny in June 2023, when he demanded the surrender of Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov. Additionally, he may have played a role in the arrest of former Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov.
As reported by the Telegram channel "VChK-OGPU", Alekseev was in the house on Volokolamskoye Highway without security, as he was in the company of a young woman with a small child. The general's official wife is 63 years old, and their children are over 30. This apartment was not Alekseev's permanent residence and was considered a safe place where the general was not supposed to be found.
It is also reported that the assassin entered the entrance during the night shift of security, using a key to the intercom. He has allegedly already been detained and, along with an assistant, transported from Dubai to Moscow.
TASS reports that after the operation, Vladimir Alekseev regained consciousness in the hospital and his life is no longer in danger.
