41-year-old Lindsey Vonn with a severe leg injury started the race, but fell at the very beginning of the descent VIDEO
A week before the start of the Olympics, the American skier sustained an injury during training
During a downhill run at a speed of about 100 km/h, she crashed into the safety nets. The woman suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a meniscus tear. Concerns arose that she would have to miss the Olympic Games in Italy.
But the 2010 Olympic champion announced that she would compete. Today, in the downhill skiing event, she started the race with bib number 13.

Literally a few seconds after the start of the descent, she seemed to lean incorrectly, her skis crossed, and Lindsey slammed onto the slope with full force.
Silence fell over the stadium, Vonn lay motionless, and then screamed wildly. Teammates and doctors rushed to her. Lindsey screamed as she was being examined. The skier was evacuated by helicopter.
The competition was stopped.
