In Seoul, on the building of the Russian Embassy in South Korea, on the eve of the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a banner in Russian, "Victory Will Be Ours," appeared, reports "Ukrainska Pravda."
The approximately 15-meter long banner, against the backdrop of the Russian tricolor, appeared on the embassy building on the morning of February 21.
As noted by Chosun newspaper, criticism is growing in Seoul's diplomatic circles that "displaying an inscription declaring victory in an invasion war in the heart of another country is a significant deviation from diplomatic conventions."
It is known that diplomatic representatives in South Korea, including those from European countries, expressed concern about this banner to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In addition, on February 11, Russian Ambassador to South Korea Georgy Zinoviev stated at a press conference with South Korean journalists at the embassy: "Russia does not forget the significant contribution made by North Korean troops to the liberation of the southern part of the Kursk region from Ukrainian forces and Western mercenaries," adding: "We will not forget the greatness of North Korean troops."
The South Korean government warned that the banner and the ambassador's statements were "clearly excessive."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that displaying such inscriptions on the embassy building could provoke the South Korean public and harm relations between South Korea and Russia. Given that the Ukrainian Embassy is also located in Seoul, there are concerns about creating unnecessary diplomatic tension.
The Ministry demanded the banner be removed, but the Russian Embassy refused. The South Korean government cannot remove it by force due to the Vienna Convention, which stipulates the inviolability of diplomatic missions.
The publication notes that on February 24 of last year, on the third anniversary of the invasion, Russia held a rally in support of the war against Ukraine with a large national flag in Seoul. It is known that the Russian Embassy in South Korea plans to hold a similar rally on the fourth anniversary of the invasion.
