President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the military rank of Brigadier General to Denys Prokopenko, commander of the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine 'Azov', reports Suspilne.

Denys Prokopenko
At the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, Denys Prokopenko and his unit defended Mariupol for three months on the territory of the Azovstal enterprise. On May 16, 2022, Prokopenko announced the order from the higher command to cease the defense of Mariupol to save the lives of the garrison's servicemen. On May 17, Prokopenko sustained a shrapnel wound, and on May 20, he left Azovstal with the command and surrendered.
On September 21, 2022, Prokopenko was released during a prisoner exchange and interned in Turkey. According to preliminary agreements, he was to remain in Turkey until the end of the war, but on July 8, 2023, he returned to Ukraine after a meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Turkey.
After his return, Prokopenko resumed service in the Azov brigade, underwent rehabilitation, and again led the unit, which has been performing combat missions in the Lyman direction since August 2023.
