Scandal at "Euroopt": 96-year-old grandfather not allowed to sit on a chair near the checkout

"People, be kinder. The situation happened in the "Euroopt" store. One checkout was working, and an old grandfather was standing in line. It was hard for him to stand, and he sat down on a free chair, which was EMPTY at the checkout. And you know what? A cashier came up, yelled at him, and said that this chair was not meant for him. I was simply shocked. Of course, people stood up for him, but the cashier didn't care. And the grandfather ended up sitting on a metal barrier that separated self-service checkouts and regular ones. This is just awful," a user of a popular social network indignantly wrote.

The post immediately gained several thousand likes. Belarusians were hotly indignant and sympathized with the grandfather. They immediately recalled a recent scandal in a pizza chain. Threats poured in: "They canceled Dodo Pizza — and we'll cancel Euroopt too." Unpleasant incidents of rudeness in other stores were recalled, and pleasant exceptions were also mentioned.

"Why am I crying? Because I have a dad, and he's 74. And I would really like for something like this to never happen to him."

"At my previous job, an old man used to come to us every evening. He was disabled, couldn't move without a walker. And so we always seated him on a chair and went to collect groceries for him according to his list. The grandfather was lonely, so he could sit for hours and talk to the staff. As for this young lady at the checkout, her chair should be taken away, let her serve customers all day standing. Maybe then she'll understand what it's like to just want to sit down."

However, not everyone was so categorical. Many noted that the cashier acted according to instructions. Should a person be punished for doing their job? After all, the young lady is responsible for the safety of the money in the till. And good people in line could have let the old man go ahead without queuing, instead of blaming the store employee entirely.

"Kindness is kindness, but one must also think. The grandfather, it turns out, sat on a chair that stands near the checkout? Of course, that's not allowed. The fact that the checkouts are not fenced off doesn't mean that anyone can sit at the cashier's workplace, especially where the money is located. It's equivalent to walking into a bank and sitting in a bank employee's workspace. And since everyone saw that the grandfather was unwell, why did no one let him go first? Why was he standing in line, everyone watched, but no one let him pass, didn't help? Why look for scapegoats when you have your own 'log in your eye'?"

Meanwhile, "Euroopt" reacted to the post, promising to investigate the situation.

And while Belarusians awaited an official response, the discussion continued.

The author of the post explained, many times, why no one let the old man go ahead. An elderly woman was in line before him, and the author didn't see who was before her.

Questions arose: why are benches not provided in retail outlets? After all, not only elderly people can feel unwell. Everyone can sometimes feel not so good. And what to do then?

And here is the response "Euroopt" gave today:

"Good day! We once again want to thank you for not passing by and sharing this situation! The company management conducted an internal investigation, as a result of which a disciplinary discussion took place with the administration of the retail facility and the cashier. The director and the cashier offer their sincere apologies. We will also make every effort to ensure that similar situations do not recur.
