A large number of early spring mushrooms, popularly known as "elfin cups", have already been spotted in Belarusian forests. This is one of the first edible mushrooms to appear in the forest after winter and is often considered a sign of the beginning of mushroom season, writes Telegraf.news.
Experienced mushroom picker Alexander Shevtsov went on a reconnaissance trip to a forest near Minsk in mid-March. Although there was still snow in the forest, he found many Scarlet Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha) – a bright red cup-shaped mushroom. Such mushrooms usually appear during the first March thaws.
Mushroom pickers consider Sarcoscypha a kind of harbinger of other spring mushrooms. After it, morels, oyster mushrooms, and false morels usually begin to grow in the forests. Since there are so many Sarcoscypha this year, it can be assumed that the harvest of other spring mushrooms will also be good. In the video shot by Shevtsov, these mushrooms grow in entire groups — sometimes by the dozens in small areas of the forest.
According to him, in three to four weeks, one can confidently go into the forest to look for more familiar mushrooms for pickers, such as morels and oyster mushrooms.
Sarcoscypha itself can also be collected, as it is edible. However, it is considered a mushroom of low culinary quality: the flesh is quite firm, and the taste is not very distinct. Nevertheless, the mushroom has a bright color that is preserved even after cooking, so it is sometimes added to salads, omelets, or other dishes for decoration.
Additionally, Sarcoscypha is called a kind of environmental indicator. It usually grows in clean forests, far from roads and industrial zones, so its appearance can indicate a good state of the environment.
