After Brent oil prices surged to $118, the US President called for an end to strikes on the energy infrastructure of the Middle East. He stated this in his blog after Israel struck Iran's largest gas field, "South Pars", on March 18, and Iran began retaliatory attacks on the largest plants in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Sources from The Wall Street Journal claim that the US President was informed about the operation in advance and supported it as a "message" to Tehran in connection with the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Trump himself stated in his blog that Washington was unaware of the attack's preparation and "forbade" Israel from launching new strikes on "South Pars".
"Unfortunately, Iran was unaware of this and unjustifiably and unfairly attacked Qatar," he said.
Trump also warned that in the event of new attacks from Tehran, the US is ready to launch another strike on "South Pars", and the field could be "completely destroyed".
In response, Iran attacked the industrial city of Ras Laffan in Qatar, home to the world's largest liquefied natural gas production complex. This complex supplies about a fifth of global LNG supplies. Qatar Energy reported "significant damage" to the facilities. In early March, the enterprise had already suspended operations due to attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
