Bass Smashed in Smells Like Teen Spirit for Sale

According to the Irish Independent, the bass guitar that late singer Kurt Cobain smashed in the music video for the band's 1991 hit, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” is going up for auction at Christie's in London on November 29. The broken instrument is expected to bring in between 15,000 and 25,000 pounds — about $24,000 to $40,000 — at auction.

The newspaper adds that former bassist Krist Novoselic specifically purchased the instrument from a pawn shop because he knew it was going to be trashed during the video shoot. While it’s unclear who’s selling the smashed instrument, it was originally taken by one of the teenage extras featured in the video.

But there is still a question: why the bass purchased by Kris was smashed by Kurt? Cobain was always eager to break a guitar at a gig. May be, the guitar he used in a video was actually a good one.
