In early 2026, during combined aerial attacks on Ukraine, Russian troops used the new «Geran-5» strike drone for the first time. The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine received the first samples for research and published details.

The new apparatus is larger than its predecessors. The drone has a length of about 6 meters and a wingspan of up to 5.5 meters. The warhead mass is about 90 kg, the declared range is about 1,000 km.
Unlike the classic «Gerans», this drone is made according to a normal aerodynamic scheme (the drone's wing is located at the front, and the tail section at the rear, like in conventional aircraft).
Military experts from the GUR note that «Geran-5» is not an entirely Russian development. It has significant structural similarities with the Iranian Karrar drone.
According to GUR information, Russians are also developing options for using «Geran-5» from aerial platforms, specifically Su-25 aircraft, with the aim of increasing its range. Separately, the possibility of equipping the apparatus with «air-to-air» missiles to counter Ukrainian aviation is being considered.
