"The powers of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev are terminated prematurely, with the Constitutional Court's confirmation of his submitted resignation. The decision enters into force today, January 23, 2026", — the court's decision states.
Vice President Iliana Iotova, in accordance with the constitution, has become the first woman in Bulgaria's history to hold the office of president of the republic. This is the sixth president in the country's history.
On Monday, January 19, on the ninth anniversary of his first oath of office as President of Bulgaria, Radev addressed the nation and announced that he was resigning and intended, along with his supporters, to participate in early parliamentary elections, which became inevitable after parties represented in parliament refused to take action to form a new government.
Iliana Iotova is 61 years old. She worked on Bulgarian Television, is a member of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, and was a deputy in the Bulgarian Parliament and the European Parliament. Since 2017, she has served as Vice President of the country.
