“First time hearing it.” Zelensky comments on information that he allegedly plans to announce elections on February 24
The British publication Financial Times reported that preparations for presidential elections and a referendum on a peace agreement with Russia have allegedly begun in Ukraine. According to the newspaper, the announcement of elections could happen on February 24 — on the anniversary of the start of the full-scale invasion. However, the team of the President of Ukraine told the BBC Ukrainian Service that as long as there are no security guarantees in the country, there will be no announcements about elections.

In the evening, Volodymyr Zelensky personally confirmed this.
"This is the first time I'm hearing about this. I read it in the FT in the morning, now I'm hearing it from you. We will come to elections when there are security guarantees. I have already said: there will be a ceasefire – there will be elections. This is a matter of security," the President of Ukraine noted, answering journalists' questions in the chat of the President's Office.
He also emphasized that he would never announce elections on February 24, as it is a very tragic and symbolic date for the country: four years of war and great human losses.
According to the Financial Times, the Donald Trump administration is allegedly urging Kyiv to hold elections and a referendum by May 15, otherwise Ukraine might lose the security guarantees offered by the US. The publication refers to anonymous Ukrainian and Western sources.
The Kremlin also reacted to the publication. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was too early to draw conclusions and one should focus on official statements, not on information citing unnamed sources.
Financial Times notes that holding elections would be a political turnaround for Zelensky, who previously stated that voting is impossible during martial law, when part of the territory is occupied, and millions of citizens are forced to leave their homes.
According to media, the issue of elections and peace agreements depends on a number of factors, including possible negotiations with Russia. Zelensky himself previously emphasized that Ukraine is not ready to make territorial concessions and "will stand where it stands."
