It Has Been Revealed How Former Racing Driver Michael Schumacher Lives Now

The famous German racing driver Michael Schumacher, who has not appeared in public for over 12 years, is not bedridden. According to the Daily Mail, he is moved in a wheelchair, but the former athlete does not speak and likely only partially understands what is happening around him. This was reported by a Daily Mail Sport columnist who has visited the Schumacher family's estate in Majorca.

According to the journalist, who cites several well-informed sources, the 57-year-old former athlete is cared for 24 hours a day by a team of therapists and nurses. The cost of such care amounts to tens of thousands of euros per week.

Schumacher spends part of his time living in a secluded luxury mansion in Majorca, valued at around 30 million euros, but his main residence is an even more expensive house on the shore of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Besides family members, only three or four non-relatives have access there. Among them is former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt, who treats Schumacher like a son and reveals almost nothing about his condition, apart from stating that he "continues to fight".

Earlier, rumors circulated in the press that Schumacher might be suffering from "locked-in syndrome" — a severe neurological condition where a person retains consciousness but cannot move or speak. However, as the article's author notes, this might not be entirely accurate either.

One person close to the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that it's impossible to be sure how much Schumacher understands: he might grasp parts of what is happening around him, but not fully.

Schumacher has not appeared in public since December 29, 2013, when he sustained a severe brain injury while skiing in the French Alps. At the wish of his wife Corinna, access to him is restricted to a narrow circle of trusted individuals and friends. Over all these years, not a single photo of Schumacher in his current state has emerged, although there have been attempts at blackmail and illegal dissemination of images and medical data — for which some culprits have been punished.

From time to time, new information about his health appears in the media, but verifying its accuracy is almost impossible. For instance, in 2025, a journalist from German channel RTL reported that Schumacher could no longer express his thoughts verbally. In the 2021 Netflix documentary, his wife and son also stated that he is unable to move independently or communicate with others.

Michael Schumacher is a seven-time Formula 1 champion, having won titles between 1994 and 2004, five of them consecutively. He still holds the record for the most fastest laps, and in terms of total wins, he is second only to Lewis Hamilton.
