All because today is Groundhog Day, or Catholic Candlemas.

In mass culture, today is Groundhog Day, made famous by the American film of the same name starring Bill Murray and Phil the groundhog. The tradition of consulting the groundhog in Pennsylvania is almost 140 years old.
It is believed that spring will be early if Phil the groundhog emerges from his burrow and isn't startled by his shadow (meaning it's cloudy); otherwise, spring will be delayed for another six weeks.
However, we have completely different weather and climatic conditions. What to do? For Catholics (and Orthodox Christians who follow the New Julian calendar), today is Candlemas, and they have their own signs.
In Ukraine, predictions are made using groundhogs Vikentiy and Timko, while in Lithuania, badgers in Žagarė Regional Park are observed.
It is believed that if a badger emerges from its burrow and starts playing around, then spring in our region will be early. In Lithuania, a special Badger Day is even celebrated on January 25.
In Belarus, there were specific signs for this day. «If a rooster drinks water on Candlemas, then an ox will eat grass on St. George's Day [May 6, New Style].»
«If there's a thaw on Candlemas, the harvest will be poor» (if today is a thaw, then spring is early, and it is not conducive to a good harvest, because the soil dries out early).
But now there are severe frosts; last night, even minus 30 was recorded.
