The Ministry of Energy of Belarus, together with local authorities, plans to develop unified rules for street lighting operation throughout the country. This was discussed on February 4 at a meeting dedicated to changing lighting modes, the press service of the agency reported .

The discussion was prompted by criticism from Alexander Lukashenka, who, at a recent meeting on the socio-economic development of the Vitebsk region, drew attention to the irrational use of electricity. According to the politician, the country is wasting excessive funds, so he instructed to set up a system where street lighting would automatically turn off around seven or half past seven in the morning.
At the Ministry of Energy meeting, they discussed how to optimize lighting schedules in settlements so that electricity is used more efficiently. The task was set to develop a unified approach taking into account social norms and the specifics of rural areas.
The agency noted that the time for switching lights on and off is determined taking into account sunrise and sunset. At the same time, in places of increased danger — near schools, hospitals, at pedestrian crossings — separate, special lighting modes are planned to be introduced.
The Ministry of Energy also emphasized that street lighting control is mostly carried out remotely, which allows for quick changes to schedules taking into account the conditions and needs of specific regions.
