Iceland intends to accelerate the question of possible accession to the European Union. As reported by Politico, citing two informed sources, a referendum on resuming negotiations with the EU could take place in the country as early as August. The parliament plans to announce the date of the vote in the coming weeks.

Initially, the government coalition promised to hold a referendum by 2027, but decided not to delay the process due to international tensions.
The decision was influenced by new American tariffs and Donald Trump's statements about a possible annexation of Greenland. A US representative even joked that Iceland could become the "52nd state," and Trump himself mentioned the country several times in his speeches when talking about Greenland.
In the European Union, it is noted that the topic of enlargement is now closely linked to security issues and the ability to act in conditions of global rivalry. The EU leadership emphasizes that cooperation with Iceland contributes to stability in troubled times.
Iceland applied for EU membership in 2009 during the financial crisis, when the country's three largest banks collapsed. However, in 2013, negotiations were suspended, and two years later, the authorities requested to withdraw the country's candidate status.
Public opinion polls in Iceland indicate that support for EU membership is growing. If negotiations resume, they could proceed relatively quickly, as Iceland is already part of the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area, and has previously managed to close some negotiation chapters.
