Phone scammers start calling on behalf of polyclinics, scaring people with a flu epidemic
Scammers in Russia have started deceiving people by intimidating them with a Hong Kong flu epidemic. They call on behalf of polyclinics and ask the victim to come for a supposedly mandatory appointment or tests for virus prevention, RBC was told by the T-Bank press service.
Specialists have discovered a new fraud scheme using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based service, the fraud roulette "Trap for scammers".
"If a person refuses, they are intimidated with an epidemic outbreak, a severe course of the disease, possible quarantine, and long rehabilitation."
Scammers also push for a decision by stating that "it will no longer be possible to make an appointment later - there will be no slots left." If the victim agrees, the criminals ask for an SMS code, which is actually a code for logging into Gosuslugi (Public Services portal). However, this is only part of the scheme, experts warn.
"After this, the victim receives calls on behalf of the Central Bank, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, or Rosfinmonitoring, who try to intimidate them — claiming that the previous call was from scammers who hacked Gosuslugi and are now trying to steal money from their bank account."
It is quite possible that this will also happen in Belarus. Scammers here are already calling on behalf of polyclinics, offering COVID vaccinations.
