In one of Belarus's stores, a routine grocery trip unexpectedly turned into a topic for heated discussion online. A Belarusian woman drew attention to the price tag: mackerel — 48.5 rubles per kilogram. Next to it was a large perch at the same price, writes BGmedia.
For many buyers, such a price for a common fish came as a real shock. Not so long ago, mackerel was considered an affordable option for the table — both for a sandwich and for a celebration.
Now, as people joke, "this is not fish, but a piece of gold."
In the comments, users do not hide their indignation and irony.
“Mackerel has really gone crazy.”
“You look at the price — and the appetite immediately disappears.”
“They used to say: the dollar grew. What has grown now? The dollar is falling, but prices are sky-high.”
“We go to the store like a museum: looked and left.”
“It's not that mackerel is expensive, it's that we earn little.”
“To celebrate the New Year, you need to save money all year.”
“Prices always go up before the holidays. But this year — it’s just insane.”
“In Europe, prices are lowered before Christmas so everyone can set a table. Here — it’s the opposite.”
“No one forces you to buy — true, but what to eat?” — commenters write.
