Siarhei Niaznayeu was put on Belarus's Black Map for giving false testimony in court against protest participants. Now he is behind bars.

Siarhei Niaznayeu
The career of Colonel Siarhei Niaznayeu ended abruptly, in an instant. He, the head of the Brahin District Police Department, got drunk and shot his wife Aksana. "She was lucky: literally a few millimeters to the left — and she wouldn't have survived," wrote blogger Ihar Losik, who found himself in the KGB pre-trial detention center in the same cell as the arrested Niaznayeu.
According to Losik, the 46-year-old former police chief has already been sentenced. The exact verdict is unknown.
In 2020, Niaznayeu was the first deputy head of the Karma District Police Department and a deputy of the local district council. At that time, his name was added to the Black Map of Belarus — for giving false testimony in court against protest participants.

Siarhei Niaznayeu. When he ran for deputy, he declared property — at that time he had an apartment in Homiel and a motorcycle.
In February 2021, Niaznayeu attended the All-Belarusian People's Assembly as a delegate.
July 2021 was rich in events for the police chief. First, he sued a 31-year-old local resident who wrote negative comments about him online. The political prisoner received two years of "chemistry" (restricted freedom) with referral, and also had to pay 1500 rubles in compensation. A few weeks later, another resident of Karma was sentenced — for coming to Niaznayeu's reception and hitting him several times. The 38-year-old man received two years in a penal colony for this.
At the end of 2021, the policeman was promoted — he headed the Brahin District Police Department. In May 2024, the police chief disappeared from the public sphere. One of the last mentions of him in the local press was early voting in the parliamentary elections, where Siarhei Niaznayeu and his wife were among the first to cast their ballots.

Siarhei Niaznayeu with his wife Aksana
This was a couple that propagandists proudly wrote about. Aksana Niaznayeva even received the medal "To the Officer's Wife". It is awarded to women who have been married to police officers or servicemen for more than 20 years of their service.

"According to the Niaznayeus, the pledge of a happy family life is the ability to appreciate another person, their dignity, hobbies, inner world and life position, as well as the ability to find compromises in various situations," wrote the Homiel police.
The inability to find a compromise led Niaznayeu behind bars. It is not exactly known under which article the former police chief was accused. If one follows practice, he should have been tried for murder (Article 139 of the Criminal Code), but as an unfinished crime. He wanted to kill — he just missed. The responsibility for such an "attempt" is the same as if he had carried out his plan completely. For murder in Belarus, depending on the circumstances, sentences range from 6 years in a penal colony to the death penalty.
