The Lithuanian leader emphasized that the Russian economy is in a difficult state, and therefore Europe must increase pressure, primarily on large energy companies.
"As for sanctions against Russia and Belarus, we must be firm.
I believe now is not the time to hesitate, and we must target the most painful areas — Gazprom, Novatek, and Lukoil — because only the boldest decisions inflict tangible losses on the regime and impact the Russian economy, which is already not in the best state," Nausėda stated.
"We know their economy is faltering, and we must try even harder to make Russia pay for its aggression," he added.
His opinion was voiced against the backdrop of an EU leaders' meeting in Brussels, where Ukraine's financial and military needs for the coming years are being discussed. One of the European Commission's proposals is to provide Ukraine with frozen Russian assets in the form of a loan, which would only need to be repaid if Russia pays reparations after the war.
Besides Ukraine, EU leaders are expected to discuss the bloc's long-term budget for 2028-2034, the progress of Western Balkan countries in the integration process, the geo-economic situation, economic challenges for the EU, and the possibility of signing a free trade agreement with four Latin American countries.
