Russian tanker, effectively detained by France in the Mediterranean Sea, will be released to sail further

French President Emmanuel Macron explained to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the Russian tanker from Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet' detained by the French will have to be released due to existing French laws. Zelenskyy reported this at a meeting with journalists in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian president thanked Macron for detaining the tanker Grinch, which belongs to the 'shadow fleet'. Macron, however, noted that legislation needs to be changed so that sanctioned Russian tankers could remain under arrest in France in the future.

Zelenskyy urged other European countries to follow France's example and stop and arrest 'shadow fleet' tankers. He emphasized that the confiscation of such vessels is one of the tools capable of accelerating the end of the war in Ukraine.

The tanker Grinch was detained on January 22 off the Spanish coast after a document check confirmed suspicions of an invalid flag. The vessel was sailing from Murmansk under the Comoros flag and frequently delivered oil to ports in China and India. The tanker appears on the sanctions lists of the EU, UK, and USA under various names.

On January 28, it was reported that the detained tanker would remain 'detained' until further decisions are made. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot previously called for strict measures against Russia's 'shadow fleet' vessels as part of the EU's 20th sanctions package.
