Photo by Belarusian Ksenia Halubovich becomes one of the winners of the international Female in Focus 2025 competition
The photo was taken in Kharkiv, 20 km from the front line – in a shelter for terminally ill and elderly people displaced from dangerous or Russian-occupied territory.

Alla, who lives in the shelter and is in this photo, already has difficulty orienting herself in reality, but she loves to talk about her family, according to the description of the photograph on the competition website.
The competition, organized by the British Journal of Photography in partnership with Nikon, aims to amplify the voices of women photographers worldwide. This year, two projects and 21 individual photos were among the winners.
Ksenia Halubovich told Radio Svaboda about the story behind the photo:
"A friend suggested this place to me when he found out I was going to Kharkiv. Stories about people who lost their homes due to occupation are very close to me. I talked to whoever I could and was about to leave. This photo was the last one. I accidentally turned around and saw this frame. And it captivated me."
Viewers can also vote for this photo in the "People's Choice" category on the competition website.
Ksenia Halubovich is a documentary photographer and filmmaker; last year, she launched her original project Columbus Post on YouTube.
