In Italy, carrying a knife without good reason can be punished with up to three years in prison
Authorities explain the tightening of measures by an increase in street violence, primarily among youth.

The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, has approved a new package of security measures. Now, carrying a knife with a blade longer than eight centimeters without good reason can result in a prison term of up to three years, Bild reports.
Authorities explain the tightening of measures by an increase in street violence, primarily among youth. A recent incident, where an 18-year-old teenager was stabbed to death by a classmate right in school, became the reason for widespread public outcry.
The new rules also expand police powers. Law enforcement officers will be able to detain people they deem a threat to public order for up to 12 hours. Police officers are also promised greater legal immunity when using weapons for self-defense.
These measures are a response to violent clashes during demonstrations: in Turin last weekend, more than 100 police officers were injured, and footage of attacks on them with batons and hammers spread across social networks.
The opposition sharply criticizes the initiative. Deputy Angelo Bonelli stated that preventive detentions are a "serious violation of the constitutional right to demonstrate."
