American wrestler and YouTube blogger Logan Paul five years ago bought a rare Pikachu card for 5.275 million dollars, setting a world record. This turned out to be a good investment: he now sold it for 16.492 million dollars, adding a diamond necklace to the lot as well.

This is a Pikachu Illustrator card, one of 39 created in 1998 for a Pokémon illustration contest.

Logan Paul put it up at Goldin auction. The auction lasted 42 days and concluded this Monday. As bidding on Monday drew to a close, the price was still holding at 6.882 million dollars, but then, during extended time, new bids appeared, raising the final sum to 16.492 million dollars including commission.

During a live stream on YouTube, Paul joked: «It seems we've worn someone down after all».

«This is insane», — he added, as the bidding closed and confetti rained down.

A moment later, Guinness World Records representative Sarah Casson appeared on screen and confirmed that this is the most expensive collectible card ever sold at auction.

The winner of the bidding was venture capitalist AJ Scaramucci — son of financier and former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci. According to Scaramucci Jr., he has planned a «planetary treasure hunt» and intends to «collect the uncollectible», and this is just the beginning.

«I am currently on a quest to buy a fossilized Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, I am going to acquire the Declaration of Independence — and I won't stop there», — he shared his plans with Paul.

The Pikachu card was sold together with a massive diamond chain, on which the wrestler wore it as a pendant in a special case. He debuted with this necklace at WrestleMania 38 in 2022 — a show of the American wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). After the sale, Paul personally placed the necklace around Scaramucci's neck.

On Saturday, the WWE star bid farewell to the card in an Instagram post, writing: «Goodbye, my friend. It was an honor for me to own the greatest collectible in the world».
