The code word "cup" did not faze the Homyel resident — he helped fraudsters deprive a Minsk pensioner of money
A 77-year-old Minsk resident turned to the police, having become a victim of fraud under the "fake water utility" scheme.
The pensioner was informed on her mobile phone about the replacement of meters. The woman dictated a code from an SMS message, reports the 'Minsk Police' Telegram channel.
Next, supposed law enforcement officers contacted her and informed her that fraudsters had obtained the pensioner's personal data and were conducting illegal financial operations in her name. To avoid a search and criminal prosecution, the woman was offered to declare all her savings.
The pensioner believed them and handed over 14,000 rubles to a courier using the code word "cup".
Detectives apprehended a 30-year-old resident of the Gomel region, who had previously become a victim of fraudsters himself under the same scheme.
The man was convinced to come to the capital to "help law enforcement officers": to take the money from the pensioner and transfer it to his bank payment card, and then — to a special account. Before his arrest, the individual managed to send part of the money — the rest was confiscated by the detectives.
