Candidate of Biological Sciences, laureate of Lukashenka's scholarship for talented youth, sentenced for political reasons

The Minsk City Court handed down a verdict to 46-year-old candidate of biological sciences Katsiaryna Kalyasnyova. The researcher was tried under parts 1 and 2 of Article 361-4 of the Criminal Code – "facilitation of extremist activity". This could be a case like Hayun's, or assistance to political prisoners. Katsiaryna received "home chemistry" (restricted freedom).
Kalyasnyova was born in Homiel. She graduated from the biological faculty of Belarusian State University (2002) and pursued a scientific career. In 2005, she completed postgraduate studies at the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the Academy of Sciences and stayed to work at the institute – first as a junior researcher, then as a senior researcher.
In 2009, she defended her candidate's dissertation, and in 2011, she received Aliaksandr Lukashenka's scholarship for talented young scientists.
From 2015 to 2021, Kalyasnyova worked at the Scientific and Practical Center for Hygiene.
She has more than 70 scientific publications.
