In Russia, an animal rights activist sentenced to 15 years for treason
In the Moscow region, animal rights activist Evgenia Kanforkina was sentenced to 15 years in a penal colony in a case of state treason and participation in a terrorist organization. She was accused of allegedly filming a helicopter factory on the assignment of the "Freedom of Russia Legion".

43-year-old Kanforkina was found guilty of attempting to join the "Legion," which is banned in Russia, in January 2023. The prosecution requested 18 years in a penal colony for her, report "Ostorozhno, Novosti" (Caution, News).
According to the indictment, Kanforkina sent her application form from a Russian email address to the organization banned in Russia. After this, a representative of the "Legion" contacted her on Telegram. In the summer of the same year, Kanforkina recorded a video address to the "Legion," pledged to cooperate, and took the call sign "Afolina." At that time, the "Legion" had already been recognized as a terrorist organization.
In September, Kanforkina was allegedly instructed to gather information about how the National Helicopter Engineering Center in Lyubertsy, near Moscow, was guarded. She managed to film the enterprise's fence and sent the video to her curators. After this, according to her, she was given the task of studying a secret object.
She refused, and contact with the "Legion" ceased. But a few months later, Kanforkina was detained.
In court, she stated that she had cooperated with a Ukrainian military organization because she was allegedly involved in rescuing animals from dangerous territories.
