Ales Bialiatski, head of the Viasna human rights center and 2022 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, received his diploma and laureate medal at the Norwegian Nobel Institute three years after being awarded the prize. Ales Bialiatski was accompanied by his wife, Natallia Pinchuk, who represented him at the award ceremony in 2022. In his acceptance speech, Bialiatski noted that the work to free political prisoners continues and highlighted that human rights defenders, journalists, and public activists are still held in prisons. He called for continued pressure on the Belarusian authorities for the release of all political prisoners.
Ales Bialiatski was detained on July 14, 2021, and sentenced to 10 years in a penal colony. He was found guilty of smuggling by an organized group and financing group actions that grossly violate public order. On December 13, he was released along with 122 other political prisoners and expelled from Belarus.
Ales Bialiatski received the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize together with the Russian society "Memorial" and the Ukrainian organization "Center for Civil Liberties".
