Among those released are Juan Pablo Guanipa, an associate of Nobel laureate and opposition figure Maria Corina Machado, and prominent lawyer Perkins Rocha.
Reuters notes that these are the latest high-profile releases made by the Caracas authorities, who are under pressure from the United States to free political prisoners.
The human rights group Foro Penal reported that 30 political prisoners were released on Sunday. The organization also confirmed that since January 8, when the Venezuelan government announced the start of a new wave of releases, 383 political prisoners have been freed.
Rocha, a lawyer for the opposition movement Vente Venezuela, was arrested in August 2024 on charges of terrorism and related crimes. Guanipa was arrested in May of last year after several months in hiding — he was accused of leading a terrorist conspiracy. Both deny all charges — both personally and through their relatives and supporters.
