USA asks Israel to stop strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure. There are three reasons for this
The administration of US President Donald Trump has asked Israel to refrain from further strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure, including oil facilities. This was reported by Axios, citing sources. The message was conveyed to the Israeli leadership and the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Eyal Zamir.
According to sources, Washington cited three main reasons for this request.
Firstly, strikes on energy facilities harm ordinary residents of Iran, many of whom oppose the current regime.
Secondly, Donald Trump is considering the possibility of cooperation with the Iranian oil sector after the war, similar to the policy he previously pursued with Venezuela.
Thirdly, such attacks could provoke Iran into massive retaliatory strikes on the energy infrastructure of Persian Gulf countries.
Journalists note that Tehran had previously attempted to attack energy facilities in the region with drones, but significant damage was not inflicted at that time. The US fears that new strikes on Iranian oil could change the situation and lead to a rise in global oil prices.
According to sources, Trump views attacks on Iran's oil and energy infrastructure as a last resort, to be used only if Iran first strikes oil facilities in Persian Gulf countries. He also warned that if Iran damages global oil supplies, the US response would be "20 times stronger."
Earlier, it was reported that on March 7, Israeli air forces carried out strikes on oil facilities in Tehran. According to Israeli media, this could have been the first instance during the current war where Israel attacked national infrastructure directly on Iranian territory.
Against this backdrop, US President's special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to visit Israel for talks on further actions.
The joint US-Israeli military operation against Iran began on February 28. As a result of airstrikes, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was eliminated. In response, Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel and several Middle Eastern countries, and also reported attacks on American military bases.
