Melania Trump stated that Aliaksandr Lukashenka's assertions are untrue and baseless. According to her, all contacts regarding the reunification of Ukrainian children abducted by Russians from occupied territories with their families occurred solely and directly between her, her official representative, and the authorities of Russia and Ukraine. There were no intermediaries, including Lukashenka, in these negotiations.
Lukashenka spoke about the alleged contacts with Melania Trump last week at a press conference dedicated to negotiations with an American delegation led by US Special Envoy John Cohl.
"Just now, Melania handed over a list of children who allegedly got lost in Russia as a result of the war in Ukraine. And she asks me, when I meet with Vladimir Putin, to hand over this list, to talk to him, so that we find these children in Russia who most likely fled the war. Find them and return them to Ukraine, if the children are ready and Ukraine is ready to take care of them," he said.
He promised to discuss this issue with Putin, but emphasized that he would not "persuade" him.
"If Melania asks (this is in furtherance of the letter she once gave to Putin about the children), I will convey this position to my older brother, no problem. But I will not fight for this, because I don't know if these children exist or not, if it's true or not, and who handed over these lists," the politician stated.
Since last October, several stages of reunification of Ukrainian children with their families have already taken place, and another one is being prepared for early April. Negotiations are ongoing and, it is claimed, are taking place in a constructive atmosphere.
