Details became known about the case of a smuggler from the Drahičyn district, who was tried for «terrorism»
In mid-January, a report emerged that the married couple Dzmitry and Volha Kapuza from the Drahičyn district were sentenced to 24 and 21 years in prison, respectively. The couple was also added to the «list of terrorists». Dzmitry and Volha were accused of «terrorism» and «illegal actions with ammunition». A former political prisoner, who was incarcerated with Dzmitry Kapuza, told «Brestskaya Vesna» about what, according to the convicted man himself, stood behind his sentence.

For a long time, almost nothing was known about the case of Dzmitry and Volha Kapuza from the Drahičyn district, as the trial was held behind closed doors.
According to his cellmate, Dzmitry Kapuza was initially charged with terrorism, but later the charge was changed to «treason». Kapuza himself explained that he was engaged in smuggling in the border village of Svaryń: transporting amber, cigarettes, and alcohol. One of the caches, probably, fell into the sight of security forces, and, according to him, explosives were planted there.
During his arrest in early 2024, as Kapuza was approaching his home, people in civilian clothes jumped out of a minivan and shot him twice in the leg without warning. He received minimal medical attention despite severe injuries. Afterwards, he was tortured: beaten, including at the KGB, threatened, and during a «forensic experiment» — already without the protection of a lawyer — subjected to severe abuse. Kapuza himself claimed he knew nothing about the explosives and that there should have only been amber in the cache.
According to a witness, along with the Kapuzas, ten other people were detained, most of whom were later released. Several of those arrested, including Dzmitry himself, pleaded not guilty. All of them, according to the former political prisoner, were subjected to severe beatings. Later, already in the pre-trial detention center (SIZA), Dzmitry looked heavily exhausted and significantly aged. He said he couldn't even imagine that smuggling would be reclassified as «espionage», as for border villages, such trade is a means of survival.
The interlocutor also mentioned another case — Dzmitry and Aksana Malochka from Baranavichy. They were sentenced to 12 and 8 years of imprisonment for «treason», although in fact, it was allegedly about photographing a train with military equipment without any spy intent.
