The Minsk Zoo has chosen the symbol of the coming year, which according to the Eastern horoscope is the Year of the Fire Horse, reports the "Minsk-Novosti" agency.
The selection was made through a vote on social networks. All interested parties could vote for one of eight horses presented, each with a different character and appearance.
The six-year-old mare Zara won. She is bay in color, a mix of Belarusian Harness and Latvian Warmblood breeds.
Zara came to the zoo in 2020, and the staff admit it was love at first sight. Zara is very attached to people: she follows the zootechnician around like a shadow, understands intonations, is calm and friendly, works with children and gently carries young riders.
Second place in the voting went to Smolka — a ten-year-old dark grey pony mare who was born at the zoo and is a favorite among children.
Third place went to Piyon, a calm and friendly pony-class horse who was brought to the zoo as an adult.
In addition, there were other interesting horses among the candidates, for example, Orlik, who comes to work in harness by himself, and Melody, a black mare with a complex but interesting character.
Zoo zootechnician Alena Yakushevich notes that she fully supports the subscribers' choice: Zara is her favorite horse, and in her opinion, the choice of the symbol of the year is fair.
In total, ten horses, five ponies, and three donkeys currently live at the Minsk Zoo.
