The bird was taken to a safe place, reported the Vitebsk Regional Committee for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

On January 23, one of the fishermen on Lake Hlodava in Pastavy district noticed a large bird that had fallen onto the ice. He immediately reported it to the district inspection of natural resources. The commission that arrived on site identified the bird as a Great Bittern — a rare species listed in the Red Book of Belarus.
A veterinary examination showed that severe hypothermia and exhaustion were the most probable cause of the fall. For its rescue, the bird urgently needed warmth, rest, and special feeding. Specialists contacted one of the nature protection institutions, which agreed to take in the bittern.
The bird was promptly placed in a warm room and fed fresh fish. After receiving first aid, it was transferred for further rehabilitation and later transported to Minsk.
