The United States found itself in the grip of abnormal frosts and snowfalls. A massive winter storm paralyzed life in two-thirds of the country. At least 30 people have already become victims of the bad weather.

The list of tragedies is growing daily. Among the dead are people hit by snowplows in Massachusetts and Ohio, teenagers killed while sledding in Arkansas and Texas, and victims of frostbite. In New York alone, the bodies of eight people were found on the streets over the weekend. In Kansas, police discovered the snow-covered body of a 28-year-old woman who left a bar without a coat or phone.
Energy and Transport Paralysis
As of Monday evening, more than 560,000 homes remained without electricity. The most difficult situation developed in the south of the country — in Mississippi and Tennessee, where freezing rain cut power lines. Special heating points have been opened in many cities, as temperatures in some places reach -31°C.
The US transport system also experienced one of its most difficult periods since the pandemic. More than 12,000 flights were canceled or delayed. On Sunday, 45% of all domestic flights in the country were canceled.
Schools in many states are closed or have switched to distance learning.
Experts predict that losses for the US economy will amount to several billion dollars. In Mississippi, this ice storm has already been called the worst since 1994 — according to local authorities, city streets after thousands of fallen trees look "as if a tornado had passed through each one."
