Next round of talks between Russia and Ukraine to take place without the US
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the next round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled for February 1, will take place without the participation of the United States and in a bilateral format. He stated this during a hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

According to Rubio, the American side could theoretically join the negotiations, but even in that case, US President's Special Representative Steve Whitcoffe and Jared Kushner, who previously participated in a trilateral meeting with Russia and Ukraine at the end of January, would not take part.
The main topic of negotiations remains the issue of territorial claims, primarily around Donbas. The parties are now trying to figure out if it is possible to bring their positions closer, but, as Rubio noted, they have not yet reached an agreement on this issue. He also stressed that for the Ukrainian side, even considering the possibility of territorial concessions is politically very difficult.
The previous round of trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi was assessed by participants as constructive and substantive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that a wide range of issues related to a possible cessation of the war were discussed there, and the number of contentious points in the peace plan was reduced. However, the territorial issue remains unresolved, as Russia continues to demand the transfer of the entire Donbas.
