Italian biathlete failed doping test just before the start of the Winter Olympics

The first doping scandal erupted in Italy even before the start of the Winter Olympic Games. Italian biathlete Rebecca Passler tested positive for doping ahead of the competitions.

Latrozole was found in the analyses of the 24-year-old athlete — a drug used to lower estrogen levels and often used to mask the effects of anabolic steroid use. The doping test was taken out of competition. As a result, Passler faces disqualification.

At junior and youth levels, this biathlete won seven World Championship medals, including gold in the relay. In the World Cup, she twice took bronze in relay races. This season, her best result is 11th place in the sprint in German Oberhof, and in the overall World Cup standings, she ranks 33rd.

The athlete's father, Johann Passler, won Italy's first Olympic medal in biathlon in 1988 — a bronze at the Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Canada.

The 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, from February 6 to 22.
