No compromises reached during meeting in the UAE

The second meeting of the Russian and Ukrainian delegations, mediated by the United States, which took place on January 24 in Abu Dhabi, lasted more than three hours and did not lead to a compromise on the Ukrainian issue, writes The Moscow Times.

Ukrainian officials described the negotiations as positive and constructive. They also noted that the next round of meetings is planned in Abu Dhabi already next week. A similar assessment was given by a representative of the UAE government, as reported by Reuters.

According to the UAE representative, the parties discussed unresolved issues within the framework of the peace plan proposed by Washington, and representatives of Kyiv and Moscow spoke directly with each other. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the main unresolved issue remains the territorial question. Moscow, as before, insists on the transfer of the entire territory of Donbas to it.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also emphasized the constructive nature of the negotiations. According to him, the main focus was on possible parameters for ending the war. He noted the importance of the US understanding the necessity of American monitoring and control over the peace settlement process and guaranteeing security. The American side, according to the President of Ukraine, discussed possible formats for consolidating agreements and the security conditions needed for this.

A source from the Russian state agency TASS reported that the meeting was not fruitless and that there were some results, though details were not specified.

Following the two meetings, the parties agreed to convey all details to the leadership of their countries and coordinate further steps with national leaders. Zelenskyy stated that if there is readiness to move forward – and Ukraine has such readiness – negotiations will continue, possibly as early as next week.

The Ukrainian delegation at the meeting was led by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, and the Russian delegation by the Head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Igor Kostyukov.
