German Chancellor Friedrich Merz rejected the proposal by Manfred Weber, leader of the center-right European People's Party, that a joint European army could play a role in post-war peacekeeping in Ukraine, writes UNIAN with reference to Politico.
Weber recently put forward a number of proposals aimed at strengthening the European Union's influence on the international stage. In particular, he proposed that military personnel from European countries operate under a single flag in Ukraine as part of post-war security guarantees.
Merz welcomed Weber's attempts to reform the EU but emphasized that some of his ideas are not an immediate solution to Europe's problems. "We must focus on the tasks that lie before us now," the German Chancellor stated.
Merz reacted quite cautiously to Weber's proposal to send European peacekeepers to Ukraine under a single flag. The agency recalled that Germany has not yet decided on its participation in the peacekeeping mission.
