On the Russian side, the talks involve President Vladimir Putin himself, his aide Yuri Ushakov, and Special Representative of the Russian President Kirill Dmitriev.

According to TASS, in addition to discussing the end of the war, the parties plan to discuss the possibility of inviting Russia to the Council of Peace, created by Trump, and the possible future of part of the Russian assets that were frozen in the United States.

Following the meeting, Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov will hold a phone briefing for journalists.

On the same day, January 22, US President Donald Trump held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Davos. The meeting lasted about an hour. After it, Trump noted that it was "a good meeting" and that "everyone wants the war to end." Kyiv reported that Zelenskyy had a "productive and substantive" meeting.

After the meeting, Zelenskyy announced that talks involving delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and the USA are planned for January 23–24 in Abu Dhabi. According to the Financial Times, the US is the initiator of the trilateral meeting, Ukraine supported the idea, and Russia has not yet given its consent. On the evening of January 22, Zelenskyy noted that the Ukrainian delegation had already departed for the UAE.
