"This is not the KGB. This is much higher." SBU shared details on the Ina Kardash case and even released recordings

On the morning of January 27, it became known that Ina Kardash, a journalist of Belarusian origin, was detained in Ukraine on suspicion of espionage. Now, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has shared more details on how, together with the internal security unit of the Main Directorate of Intelligence, it prevented an attempt by a Belarusian KGB agent to infiltrate the structures of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Conversations between the woman and her handler were also published, as well as a video where she boasts of having 10 years of experience in special services and connections "higher than the KGB." The transcripts of these conversations were made by Reform.news.

Reportedly, as a result of a multi-stage special operation in Kyiv, a well-covered 35-year-old spy who had been cooperating with the Belarusian KGB since 2015 was detained.

According to the case materials, in 2020 she was sent from Minsk for undercover intelligence activities in Ukraine. At that time, she was already under the SBU's radar, which gradually recorded her reconnaissance activities. Thus, a recording came into their possession where Ina Kardash talks about her intelligence skills:

Kardash (K.): The role of a scout under the guise of a journalist just suits me better. That's true. I really know how to extract information very well.

Kardash indeed operated under the cover of a journalist and for some time worked as her own correspondent for Viktor Medvedchuk's "112 Channel" in the countries of the former USSR.

Handler: Imagine you are on a long-term assignment, so monthly, depending on how things are, I offer you 3 euros to start.

K.: 3 thousand?

Handler: 3 thousand euros.

After the closure of Medvedchuk's media resources, the Belarusian KGB, in coordination with the country's highest military and political leadership, sent the agent to Ukraine. The handler assured her that the decision on cooperation was made personally by Alexander Lukashenko.

Handler: The decision to accept you is made through one person. The very first person of our country. That is, we have three people who will know only about you. And technically, even if you've seen, you'll understand what I'm talking about. This is not a classic [approach], but specifically... Specifically security, from the point of view of your safety. There is both experience and support from the first person of our country. Because we are talking about such things. These are generally unique things. And the question of your candidacy will be discussed. The main thing is that I somehow understand where we are going.

Even before the start of the full-scale war, Kardash got a job at one of the leading Ukrainian media outlets and used this work, as well as her colleagues' contacts, to establish connections with Ukrainian politicians, military personnel, and foreign diplomats.

Already during the full-scale invasion, the handler ordered her to travel to one of the EU countries for additional instructions. She crossed the border under the fabricated pretext of a medical examination. To communicate with the Belarusian special agent, the woman bought a new smartphone with a "disposable" SIM card, and after contact, she disposed of the device.

Handler: Reset it to factory settings and just accidentally break it, that's all.

K.: Destroy it?

Handler: Yes, of course. Well, why? Imagine you go there and you're with this phone. Moreover, you say that in your apartment, where you work, there are many people around. You'll have to get rid of this new phone, break it. There's nothing terrible about it. If needed, we'll reimburse you two or three times the money. I'll give you everything you need. Then, as you wish. We'll talk about these things.

During the briefing, the agent was tasked with collecting information about citizens of Belarus and Russia who are helping Ukraine during the war. In addition, she was instructed to establish informal contacts with representatives of the Chinese embassy in Ukraine to gather intelligence on the activities of Chinese diplomats.

After returning to Kyiv, Kardash tried to get a job in one of the staff units of Ukraine's military intelligence, where she came under the control of the Main Directorate of Intelligence's (GUR) internal security service. The woman discussed with her handler how to pass a polygraph.

K.: And also, let's put it this way, I shouldn't know, because I have to pass a polygraph, I shouldn't know who I'm talking to, okay?

Handler: Okay. It's just, you understand, there will be questions.

K.: Okay. I don't care who will be talking there, so I shouldn't know. If there wasn't a polygraph, of course, I would want to know. But I have to pass it in the next two weeks, so.

A video was also published where the girl explains how she was taught to pass a polygraph.

"And it's simply good for me that I don't secrete sweat on my fingers in principle. My fingerprints are hard to take. That is, they find it hard to trace my fingers. My heartbeat is weak. And I've already taught myself, as they explained to me, how to work with a polygraph... I understood sooner or later that I would have a polygraph, and so I prepared myself for it. You just deal with tricky questions... You work with them in your head, and it's not that you convince yourself of the opposite, because that won't work," she says.

Thanks to timely exposure, the SBU and GUR began a prolonged operational game with Kardash, which allowed them not only to record all her actions but also to systematically disinform the Belarusian special service through her.

In particular, the KGB was deliberately guided to receive and copy false "secret" information that was controllably disseminated around the agent. Attempts to identify individuals for possible recruitment into the agent network were also recorded.

Another video shows a conversation between the agent and a Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier during an attempted recruitment. She claims that she works not with the KGB, but "much higher."

K.: Do you want to explain to me, a person with ten years of experience in the services, how this works? Do you want to teach me something? I don't think it's worth it. You were explained what, and how, and what. And no one is forcing you to do anything. At all. If you don't want to, you don't have to. This is not the KGB. This is much higher. No one else will touch me in this life. Personally for me, this is f***ing good. No one will touch you. This is simply under all sorts of guarantees, including my personal ones and so on. No one will touch you.

AFU Soldier: That's not how it works.

K.: That's how it works. F*** that's how it works.

AFU Soldier: That's not how it works. And with your ten years of experience, you should have understood that by now.

After collecting a full body of evidence, the SBU, jointly with the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, detained the spy near her place of residence. A smartphone and a voice recorder, on which she recorded classified information, were confiscated from her.

She is now suspected under Part 1 of Article 114 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (espionage). She is in custody and could face up to 15 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. The special operation was conducted under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
